Abstract
A set of three conditions are developed which characterize generalized Barlow-Wu systems within the larger class of monotone continuum structure functions. This provides an alternative characterization to results of Block and Savits [Oper. Res. 32 (1984) 703-714] and Kim and Baxter [Oper. Res. Lett. 6 (1987) 297-300].
