Abstract
Detailed investigations of Carboniferous anthracites in three Appalachian coalfields have revealed important insights into the regional geology of the three areas with distinct tectonic and thermal histories. Specific geologic information obtained from coal studies includes: paleoburial depths, thrusting sequence, and influence of hydrothermal fluids. This discussion summarizes numerous studies of anthracite fields from Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts and Rhode Island in order of increasing metamorphism with emphasis on tectonic and thermal history.
