Abstract

ASABE member Michael Sama, ASABE's 2012 'New Face of Engineering,' was the recipient of the 2011 Sunkist Young Designer Award for his exceptional engineering creativity and achievements. An engineer associate in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Kentucky, Sama is involved in the design and implementation of custom control algorithms, user interfaces, and numerical analysis tools for research and extension projects. As an instructor teaching instrumentation to graduate students, he puts an emphasis on theory, and tries to incorporate the students' areas of interest to fulfill the application component. He encourages students to take an incremental approach to engineering design. Through the implementation of this subsystem, students have gained practical electrical design experience with industry-standard serial communications and embedded control.
