Abstract

This chapter covers equine bullous diseases of the skin and mucous membranes, caused by immune-mediated destruction of a particular component of the epidermis or basement membrane zone, which are characterized by vesicle and bullae formation. The diseases discussed include bullous pemphigoid, cutaneous drug reactions, discoid lupus erythematosus, systemic lupus erythematosus, erythema multiforme and the pemphigus complex, which is comprised of pemphigus foliaceous, pemphigus vulgaris and paraneoplastic pemphigus. The initiating factors, diagnosis and prognosis of these diseases are varied, and accurate diagnosis can ensure the best management approach and prognosis. Vesicles can form with a variety of non-immune-mediated diseases in horses, including contact dermatitis, viral infection, photosensitivity, vasculitis, thermal burns, urticarial and various hypersensitivities. A full clinical history can assist in narrowing the differential diagnosis list.
