N2 - Palladium(II) derivatives were intercalated in smectite clay and their activity in the carbomethoxylation of ethylene studied. The activity of the complexes depends on the Brönsted acidity of the clay support: sodium montmorillonite, a weakly acidic clay, shows no promoting effect, whereas with more acidic clays such as K10 montmorillonite reaction rates of the order of 100 turnovers h-1 are obtained.
