Abstract

Palladium(II) derivatives were intercalated in smectite clay and their activity in the carbomethoxylation of ethylene studied. The activity of the complexes depends on the Brönsted acidity of the clay support: sodium montmorillonite, a weakly acidic clay, shows no promoting effect, whereas with more acidic clays such as K10 montmorillonite reaction rates of the order of 100 turnovers h-1 are obtained.
