Abstract

• Coal pyrolysis to coal tar pitch (isotropic) • Melt spinnable • Oxidizable (suitably high Tsp) • Carbonized (graphitized) • Initial tensile results consistent with isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber • Refine pitch towards high yield mesophase, and high spinnability, with value added coke • Characterize pitch QI, ash • Characterize carbon fiber • Analyze economics.
