Carotid endarterectomy for stroke prevention in older people

Research output: Contribution to journalReview articlepeer-review

Abstract

Consideration of the elderly patient's symptom status and anticipated stroke risk with best medical therapy, perioperative risk, life expectancy, medical comorbidities, and current quality of life is critical in deciding whether to recommend carotid endarterectomy. This recommendation can only be made with knowledge of the surgeon's rates of perioperative complications.
