Abstract
We present a canonical derivation of the central charge and BPS equations of the low-energy effective action for M = 2 SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb phase. Our formula for the central charge includes additional terms that depend on the core structure of charged solitons. We also show that supersymmetry is in general violated by magnetic charges. However, for BPS states, supersymmetry can be restored by adding source terms to the lagrangian.
