Abstract

The authors address the question of how a computer system can be designed to take advantage of GaAs's faster switching times to avoid limiting system performance by communication-bandwidth and circuit-density factors. They hope to specify a set of design guidelines which are sufficiently flexible that they encompass both GaAs and silicon technologies, as well as any others that may evolve. They present a compiler-writer's view of how such guidelines can be created, as well as a number of specific guidelines given as examples.
