Abstract

Radiative corrections of order α2(Zα)5m to the lamb shift are considered. It is shown that all contributions of this order are induced by six gauge invariant sets of diagrams with two external Coulomb lines and different radiative insertions. Corrections connected with diagrams containing polarization insertions in external Coulomb lines are calculated and their contribution is equal to 0.056[ α2(Zα)5 π]m for the hydrogen state with principal quantum number of two. This gives 2.42 kHz as a correction.

This contribution is larger than the experimental error but quantitative comparison between theory and experiment must await calculation of all other contributions of this order induced by gauge invariant sets of diagrams in figs. lc-lf. Work on their calculation is now in progress and we hope to report results as soon as possible #3 One of the authors (M.E.) thankfully acknowledges helpful discussions with S.G. Karshenboim and V.A.
