Abstract

A wide variety of theories have been developed to explain criminal behavior. This article discusses three general types of theories of criminal offending: biological/physiological theories, psychological/psychiatric theories, and sociological theories. For each type, specific theories are reviewed along with the strengths and weaknesses of each.
