Cultivating Protocol Development Using DMPTool: Engaging Users in the Review Planning Process

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

Background: In April 2022 our library launched an updated systematic review guide. The new guide highlights resources our librarians developed in support of systematic and scoping reviews. In particular, the librarians developed a protocol development template using DMPTool.

Description: Our goal was to create a guide and protocol template that focused on user-oriented tasks. Using the PRISMA-P extension, the librarians developed a DMPTool template that was designed as a teaching modality and embedded within the updated systematic review guide. The goal was to encourage users to write a protocol for their advanced reviews by providing action-oriented statements to steer users quickly to needed information. The librarians chose DMPTool because it allows for hints, descriptions, and links to be embedded into the template. These features let users explore the concepts of systematic and scoping reviews while planning for searching, data management, appraisal, and more. Protocols developed using this template are both educational and productive because a PDF can be created and then submitted to registries or journals. Finally, during this presentation our DMPTool template will be showcased and a creative common licensed template will be made available.

Conclusion: The redesign of the guide and the launch of the DMPTool template allows for librarians to provide an asynchronous learning experience while saving time on consults. These tools provide users quick access to standardized resources for conducting systematic and scoping reviews and creates more hands-on and productive meetings.
