Abstract
The authors define and discuss in-custody deaths in the United States of America, a category of death investigation fraught with technical, logistical, medical, and potentially political ramifications. Such deaths require interaction with and cooperation by multiple entities, including law enforcement, corrections, medical, and death investigation officials.
