Abstract
The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of data-centric engineering (DCE) and its application in construction research. The chapter starts by summarizing the research done on artificial intelligence and its impact on the construction industry. Next, the chapter introduces the concept of DCE and emphasizes the need to switch from model-centric to DCE as engineering applications become more complex. The chapter then highlights major examples of DCE applications from construction research, and ends by emphasizing how digital twin can be a defining DCE approach for the industry. The findings of this chapter can provide construction researchers and practitioners with the introductory information they need as they research and apply DCE within the construction industry.
