Abstract

Mining method selection is a very important step during mining feasibility studies. This task involves a number of quantitative and qualitative factors for consideration, such as geomechanical properties of the deposit, technological requirements, economical, societal and cultural expectations. In practice, when applying mining method selection methodologies, the expert team faces a multi-variant result and needs to make a final decision which one of the feasible methods to select. Since the input information, usually contain some degree of uncertainties, the solution of the problem inevitably leads to probabilistic outcome. In this paper, a decision support system for mining method selection based on a Bayesian belief network is proposed. The methodology is presented through a case study for an existing mineral deposit in Europe.
