Abstract

Firefighting is a strenuous occupation that requires optimal levels of physical fitness to enhance job performance and decrease the risk of injury. Physical fitness outcomes can be improved through the implementation of a comprehensive fitness program. The purpose of this article is to provide insight regarding the development of fitness programs for firefighters by discussing how to conduct a needs analysis, generate support for a fitness program within a fire department, manage related legal issues, assess firefighter performance, and Design a functional training program.
