Abstract

The initial sizing stage of a design procedure for PM synchronous motors is presented in the paper. Analytical equations are developed and employed to establish a preliminary motor design. The formulae are used to illustrate the influence of the rotor configuration, electromagnetic loading and air-gap thicknesses on the motor performance. Suggestions regarding the improvement of efficiency, power factor, overload performance and PM protection against permanent demagnetization are also given.
