Abstract
Flank incisions for ovariectomy and oviduct removal were made in 26 standing mares, 14 aged mares (17.4 + 3.8 years) and 12 young mares (4.8 + 1.5 years). They were treated IV with either detomidine hydrochloridea (20 gg/kg BW) or xylazineb (670 l-tg/kg BW) plus morphine (670 ~tg/kg BW), in a blinded study design. Scoring systems were used to assess temperament before treatment, and sedation, analgesia, coor- dination and response to surgical procedures after treatment. Stratifying both age groups equally over both treatments allowed for the evaluation of age effects. The surgical site was anesthesized with lidocaine by an inverted lumbar block. Coordination was not significantly different (P<0.1) between mares which received detomidine or xylazine plus morphine. Sedation was significantly P<0.01) deeper for mares which
