Abstract

DTMs are a subset of 3-D models that can provide significant value to the delivery of highway projects throughout its life cycle. The primary use cases of DTMs are in supporting grade work and surveying, and most DOTs realize benefits for calculating quantities and verifying accuracy of plans. The most significant barriers to the use of DTMs relate to training and knowledge for staff and other direct stakeholders. There are some concerns with accuracy and completeness of the DTMs and overall trust of the technology. But as technological capabilities advance and DOTs seek to improve personnel efficiencies, the use of DTMs to support digital project management and delivery likely will continue to increase.
