Abstract

The electromagnetic mass differences of p, n and Δ++, Δ+, Δ0, Δ- are evaluated in the Skyrme model. In order to explain the observed proton-neutron mass difference, a new term which corresponds to the down-up quark mass difference has to be introduced. With Mp = Mn as an input which requires md-mu = 2 MeV, we predict the mass differences MΔ++-MΔ+, MΔ+-MΔ0 and MΔ0-MΔ-.
