Abstract

Some writers seized the controversy as an opportunity to discuss larger concerns about the Olympics, whereas others focused on issues such as the possibility of boycotts and other manners in which solidarity for LGBTQ athletes and citizens could be demonstrated. Jenkins wrote that “if the Olympics hadn’t come to Sochi, there wouldn’t have been such a tough but needed dialogue over whether the International Olympic Committee needs to stop awarding the Games to countries that commit human rights violations” (2014, p. D1).
