Abstract
Research conducted at the University of Kentucky to develop a new class of polyamino acid functionalized membranes to remove and recover dissolved heavy metals by microfiltration is described. The membranes were based on polyamino acids such as polyaspartic acid, poly-L-glutamic acid and polyarginine. The applications and economics of heavy metal recovery using the functionalized membrane sorbent are outlined. Two case studies are presented.
