Abstract

During adolescence, understanding and expressing gender and sexual orientation are typical developmental tasks. For most adolescents, gender identity is consistent with their biologic sex. But for some their gender identity, role or expression differs from the cultural norms of a particular sex. The chapter describes gender dysphoria, mental health, and risk taking behaviors and guidelines on providing care to transgender youth.
