Abstract
Trophic hormones and growth factors in the gastrointestinal tract function to enhance cell proliferation and repair and maintain tissue. Herein, we present the most commonly described growth factors and discuss the function of each as it pertains to the gastrointestinal tract. We also briefly describe the role that these trophic hormones play in tumor development.
