Abstract
Core Messages: The triad of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and abnormal renal function needs to alert the provider about the possibility of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Mortality and prognosis of HUS have improved dramatically over the years with improved understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease and advances in fluid and electrolyte management. Early anticipation of and preparation for renal replacement therapy is crucial in the management of oliguric or anuric acute renal failure. Despite the lack of controlled studies, early nutritional support aiming for a positive caloric balance might be an important part of the treatment strategy.
