Abstract

The role of the rat in research developed incrementally and involved the dedicated efforts of many men and women scientists. The genetics and standards for care were elucidated over many years, allowing the rat to contribute to discoveries in areas as diverse as neuroscience and behavioral research, nutrition, genetics, and cancer. This chapter summarizes the essential contributions that have resulted in the rat as a valuable research model.
