Abstract

Fasting serum concentrations were measured before and after parathyroidectomy in 6 patients with hypercalcemic secondary hyperparathyreoidism. Serum gastrin levels were found to be related directly to plasma calcium concentration and gastric secretion, falling congruently after surgery. A marked increase in gastrin concentration and gastric secretion was induced by calcium infusion after operation. The authors conclude that calcium induced hypersecretion of gastric acid is caused by calcium induced hypergastrinemia from hyperplastic tissue.
