Abstract
The last few years have witnessed the emergence of a wide range of multimedia applications among users of desktop computers. Audio and video have become integral components of these applications. Consequently, considerable attention is being given to efficient implementations of flexible and extensible solutions to audio/video management, manipulation, and distribution. This paper describes the design of a low-cost video conferencing system running over an ATM network and discusses gains in practical implementation. The paper also presents a performance evaluation of the system and highlights bottlenecks that limit end-to-end video application performance.
