Abstract

Though multidisciplinary efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality have improved outcomes for surgical patients, our understanding of this problem is still evolving. There are both fixed and modifiable factors that influence a patient's surgical course. This introductory chapter provides a brief organ-based overview of the literature on perioperative morbidity and long term outcomes and frames the discussion for subsequent chapters.
