Abstract
After an introduction on anatomy and (patho)physiology of muscle a review of equine myopathies is given. The prevalence and incidence of myopathies differs significantly among breeds, their anticipated use and geographic location. Localized muscle disorders may be caused by infection, trauma and local circulatory problems (e.g. aortic-iliac thrombosis). Systemic muscle disorders are exertional rhabdomyolysis, metabolic storage myopathy, exhaustion myopathy, atypical myoglobinuria in grazing horses, myalgia, hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, postanesthetic myopathy, nutritional myopathies and myotonia.
