Funding Information:In general, 10M reports serve as background documents for planning and they frequently influence policy decisions. This 10M report sets the stage for widespread recognition and discussion ofpublic health, which is expected from the public health community and the general public. 10M was chartered as part of NAS to bring together members ofthe medical profession and other p-rofessions to examine policy matters related to the health ofthe American public. In this role, 10M functions under the NAS 1863 congressional charter to be an advisor to the federal government and to identify issues related to medical care, research, and education. The study was commissioned and funded by the Kellogg Foundation and the U.S. Public Health Service.
