Need for a professional code of ethics in biomedical engineering: a lesson from history

Abstract

Changes in industry and the healthcare system have generated an opportunity for advancement of the people and the profession of Biomedical Engineering. This opportunity is well-deserved because Biomedical Engineering creates value for society by developing new technologies that cost-effectively improve human health and longevity. History suggests that in order to foster further advancement, the need for the development of, and adherence to, a code of ethics should be realized.
