Abstract

Olfactory sensory neurons and the process of adult neurogenesis have been major targets for expression profiling studies in the olfactory system. The >10000mRNAs identified in olfactory sensory neurons predict responses to an unusually wide variety of intercellular signals, participation in diverse cell adhesion relationships, use of chromatin remodeling for functions not yet understood, robust stress response pathways, ciliogenesis, and control of gene expression through >250 transcription factors. Transcriptional changes during adult olfactory neurogenesis reveal molecular mechanisms supporting apoptosis of damaged neurons, infiltration of immune cells, proliferation of progenitor cells, and differentiation of new sensory neurons.
