Abstract
You can gain valuable career-related experience in many ways, including internships, volunteering, short-term employment, or fellowships. Filling in knowledge gaps doesn't require formal education—seek out informal avenues such as auditing undergraduate courses, adult education classes, or online training. Learning the language of your chosen career is key to selling your academic knowledge and experience in the private sector. Be realistic about what opportunities are right for you and know when to say no—you are your biggest advocate in the career preparation process.
