Abstract

The effectiveness of reinforced concrete (RC) columns partially confined/wrapped with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) sheets is evaluated in this paper. The current state of art concentrated primarily on RC columns that are fully wrapped and few experimental and analytical studies dealt with partially wrapped RC columns. In this paper, 3D Finite element (FE) models are generated to analyze the behavior of concentrically loaded RC circular columns that are partially and fully wrapped with Carbon FRP (CFRP) sheets. The influence of the number of strips, concrete compressive strength, transverse steel reinforcement, longitudinal steel reinforcement, and strip arrangement is evaluated. Results showed that a significant increase in strength and ductility of concrete can be achieved by using FRP strip wrapping.
