Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of social cognition, including metacognition, in fiction, while also calling attention to instabilities inherent in the concept “theory of mind.” It reviews a wide range of research questions made possible by foregrounding socio-cognitive aspects of fiction, and it models a practical, reader-friendly, non-dogmatic, and self-reflective approach to those questions.
