Abstract
This paper outlines a review of the recent advances in the calculation and assessment of radial forces and vibrations in permanent magnet and induction machines (or unbalanced magnetic pull UMP). The causes of UMP are discussed and mechanisms that lead to steady radial forces and vibrations outlined. The UMP discussion is initially general but it is furthered in the context of the brushless permanent magnet machines and induction machines. The effects of saturation and use of parallel paths are highlighted.
