Abstract
Abnormalities of the estrous cycle in mares can be classified as abnormalities affecting follicular development, ovulation, or luteal function as well as ovarian neoplasia. Differential diagnosis of these conditions is based upon a careful history, physical examination of the reproductive tract, transrectal ultrasonography, as well as endocrine assays. A careful etiologic diagnosis is important in the management of abnormal estrous cycles in the mare, and management for specific conditions affecting the estrous cycle are discussed.
