Abstract

A reliability analysis of slope stability to investigate retrogressive landslides is performed, based on a case study of a wharf project in the city of Tianjin, China. The stability loss is caused by the change of geometry of slope system and geotechnical properties. Results from this study identify the failure mechanism and examine the factors that triggered the occurrence of the landslide. The probabilistic approach is applied in terms of probability of failure and reliability index. To figure out the safety factor, this paper discusses the shear strength reduction technique using the finite difference method based on the continuum mechanics operated by the program FLAC 3D, which is compared with traditional limit equilibrium method of slices with Bishop Method. It can be found that application of the shear strength reduction technique is more sensitive and reliable for large scale slope stability assessment.
