Abstract

The world is experiencing continuous growth in energy demand as population raises and the living standards are improving in many countries. Fossil fuels have supported the development for more than a century, but now there is a global mindset and vision that such resources are limited and preservation is required in order to meet the critical needs of the future society. Mitigation in terms of energy storage can be implemented at short time scale, up to hours, using, for example, ultracapacitors and batteries, or for long scale, up to days, using hydro power stations. Substantial research is also going on adapting the renewable energy technology to the grid, so stability is ensured and grid is supported against vulnerability so it is stable all the time as well as the renewables are able to support the grid when the grid is vulnerable.
