Abstract
Optimal function of the respiratory muscles depends upon the continuous supply of blood-borne oxygen and metabolic substrates. This article reviews the factors known to influence the level of respiratory muscle blood flow, the effect of several common pathological processes on respiratory muscle blood flow, and the relationship between respiratory muscle blood flow and respiratory muscle fatigue.
