Abstract
Power determination is the most critical analysis performed in the evaluation or selection of an off-highway truck. Proper power selection is necessary to ensure safe and efficient operation and to minimize overall materials handling cost. In the present paper, basic principles of truck powering are briefly reviewed and a new power component of "reserve power" is introduced. Treatment of changeable operating conditions in determining power is emphasized. Traditional truck-powering techniques are reviewed and their limitations noted. Improved techniques resulting from recent studies are offered and innovations in providing suitable power to enhance qualities of ruggedness and agility are treated.
