Abstract

The firm determination of spins and parities of possible octupole states at excitation energies between 2 and 3 MeV is crucial for understanding the anomaly in the behavior of low-energy octupole states which occurs in the Pt-Hg region. The Pt196(n,n) reaction has been used in an effort to identify four possible octupole states observed previously in the (p,p) reaction and to make spin-parity assigments.
