Abstract
Applied research is generally conducted because of a desire to change participant performance (behavior) in some way. Thus, the careful and appropriate selection, characterization, and measurement of target behaviors is of critical importance for reducing the likelihood of threats to internal, external, and construct validity. Dependent variables are the targeted behaviors that are measured in a given study, along with the relevant measurement parameters. That is, you might select a target behavior of engagement and your dependent variable might be the percentage of time a child is engaged.
