Abstract

Stormwater detention basins are increasingly being used to control both storm sewer overloads and urban nonpoint source pollution. Despite the widespread use of such basins, the majority of current design techniques fail to consider the complex nature of the problem. A general planning methodology has been developed for use in the planning of dual purpose detention basins. The methodology employs continuous simulation, statistical analysis, and a general design heuristic to obtain an integrated system of detention basins. Both water quality and water quantity constraints may be considered. The developed methodology can be used for the analysis of a particular detention system or in deriving general planning guidelines. This paper provides a description of the methodology along with a sample application.
