Abstract

The capital?M? in typeface is the largest letter in the alphabet. It takes up, in all typefaces, nearly three times the amount of space as a typical letter, say “t,? or “s.? The capital M is so big, in fact, that in typography, a special term and a special keyboard place must be reserved for it. This key is called the “[em] space? and it designates a larger hole in the line of type for the big old M.
