Abstract
The internet and social media have become integrated into the fabric of daily life for adolescents, who use and rely on this technology for many functions. The internet and social media can provide adolescents with benefits, but it also has risks. Two pitfalls of the internet and social media will be presented. These pitfalls are the possible harmful effects of social media on psychological well-being and cyberbullying. In addition, the controversy of internet addiction will be briefly reviewed. Three benefits of social media for adolescents will also be covered. These benefits are the effects of social media on peer affiliation, its effects on identity development, and its use in health care. Recommendations for adolescents, their parents, and health care providers are included.
