Abstract

A total engine performance monitor was developed; it uses the signal from a needle lift transducer to calculate and display the speed, torque, power, fuel consumption and BSFC of a diesel engine. A new performance parameter, fuel optimization efficiency (FOE), is also computed and displayed by the monitoring system. The FOE compares the actual engine operation to that needed to achieve peak fuel economy. Performance displayed by the total performance monitor compared closely to that measured by conventional methods.
