Towards Safer Autonomous Cars: A Roadmap for Gaps in Quality of Service and Quality of Experience Standardization

Abstract

Safety must be absolute, guaranteed, and uniformly measurable across the road transportation ecosystem. The development and deployment of autonomous cars should center on ensuring road safety. While safe and reliable communication represents only one layer of the broader safety architecture, it serves as the lifeline for real-time decision-making and actions that contribute to safe operation of autonomous cars. Thus, communication network operations and mechanisms play a critical role in the success of autonomous cars because they directly affect user trust and shape adoption. However, achieving safe and reliable communication in fully autonomous cars remains a critical challenge. In this paper, we analyze the policies and guidelines of standardization organizations on safe and reliable communication in autonomous cars, identify existing gaps, discuss their implications and recommend potential solutions. We examine how network Quality of Service (QoS) closely affects the user's Quality of Experience (QoE), particularly in terms of trust.
