Abstract

The use of geographic information systems (GIS) in the transportation sector, commonly referred to as GIS-T, is explored in this chapter, focusing on those GIS applications found in urban planning and development. After a short section on applicable technologies and methodologies, two general types of applications are discussed: transportation planning and traffic engineering. Not all applications fall cleanly into one of these categories (e.g. traffic impact analysis, intelligent transportation systems), but the classification serves to focus the following discussion on the multitude of potential GIS applications in the transportation sector.
